0.0 Introduction

Welcome to the Acrobat and PDF FAQ file. This document is an attempt to address and answer many questions new and experienced users may have about Acrobat or its file format, the Portable Document Format (PDF).

This FAQ addresses issues with Adobe Acrobat 2.1 and earlier products, as well as the PDF specification v.1.1 and earlier.

0.1 Terms

This document uses several terms and acronyms which you should be familiar with:

  1. PDF - This stands for the Portable Document Format and is the file format Adobe Acrobat displays.
  2. FAQ - You should already know this one, but for completeness: FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. Most newsgroups have a FAQ and usually can be found in ftp://rtfm.mit.edu
  3. HTML - This stands for HyperText Markup Language and is one of the most common display formats in use by the World Wide Web.

0.2 Prerequisites

This document assumes that you have an understanding of at least one of Acrobat's supported Operating Systems. Additionally, you should have a cursory knowledge of PostScript, or at least an idea that PostScript exists.
